Bible Reading

READ IT

Sin will keep you from this Book. This Book will keep you from sin. --Dwight L. Moody

Proverbs 30:5, Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him.

Several years ago, I gave my two sisters a Bible. In the front of each, I wrote the above quote by Moody. Why that quote? Well, it has a simple but foundational truth in it. You see, the more we read God’s Word, the more it will direct where we go, who we hang with, what we do, and even when we do them.

Are you a believer? Do you read your Bible every day? It can be just a few verses, a chapter, or chapters. If not, why not? If you’re reading it, then you’re getting some help to keep you from sin!

WHY SHOULD I READ THE BIBLE?

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 2 Timothy 3:16

According to Barna Research group, only 56% of Practicing Christians read scripture regularly. Wow, 56%! Now, think about that for a moment… a little more than half of the people reading this post will make an effort to pick up their Bibles and read it today. I wonder if we took a pole who would make up that 44%? Would it be a Sunday School teacher? Would it be a Junior Church worker? Would it be a Pastor, preacher, evangelist, or missionary?

Reading the Bible is essential for our edification!

Once again, my list isn’t exhaustive…

A.         It powers our Faith-

“But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.” John 20:31

B.         It direct our Footsteps-

”Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” Psalm 119:105

C.         It delivers us from Failing in our temptations- ”There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it. 1 Corinthians 10:13

How faithful are you to your Bible reading? I recently heard this quote, “Those who spend more time reading books about the Bible than they do reading the Bible are likely to be influenced more by what men said about the Bible than by what God said in the Bible.” R. B. Ouellette.
